Legal basis
As of July 1st, 2006, lead and other substances may no longer be contained in most electronic products, with the long-term goal of reducing environmental damage caused by old electronics. The basics at the European level are RoHS guidelines (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) und the WEEE guidelines (Waste of Electrical and Electronic Equipment). Both of these guidelines are united in Germany in the ElektroG (Electronics Law) that came into effect in 2005. There are some exceptions for individual product groups (e.g. medical equipment), and for replacement parts that will eventually cease to exist.
Implications
In terms of the conversion, environmental considerations had to be introduced into the entire process chain in product creation. In electronics production, solder, circuit board materials and process parameters changed. Soldering units were adjusted and in many cases replaced by new units. Many components had to be converted to RoHS-compatible components and have to withstand the higher temperature loading of lead-free soldering. The conversion presents a great challenge in electronics manufacturing.
Solutions by the bebro business group.
Since mid 2004, parallel soldering units are available for lead bearing and lead-free soldering, so that products can be converted step-by-step to “lead-free”. That lets you avoid risks and additional costs. Services such as development, layout and component consulting help you to develop products quickly with the required competence. Use this opportunity to convert to “lead-free” electronics with us.
